Christine Hatter
PhD student, Materials Science & Engineering
Drexel Faculty Mentor: Yury Gogotsi
Christine Hatter is a second year PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering. Christine became involved in undergraduate research at Rutgers University, Camden, where she contributed to an NSF-funded project focused on the mechanisms of nanoparticle generation by laser ablation under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Bubb. She gained additional experience working on nanomaterial synthesis for energy applications through a Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) and Higher Education Research Experience (HERE) internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. As a research intern under the guidance of Dr. Mariappan Parans Paranthaman, Christine conducted research projects related to 3-D printing of bonded magnets and investigating the conductivity of solid Ag Ions in conductive glasses.
At Drexel, Christine is advised by Dr. Yury Gogotsi to study the mechanical properties of MXenes, in association with Dr. Manish Chhowalla of Rutgers University. Her current research includes a fundamental study of Ti3C2 MXene-Polymer composites and investigation of methods of using external magnetic materials to increase MXene functionality. She is an NSF-AGEP Program participant and received the Drexel’s Provost Award. In July 2016, Christine spent three weeks as a visiting researcher at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where she conducted research as part of a research collaboration on new MXene applications and facilitated workshops on MXene synthesis for KAIST students, faculty, and staff. Christine aims to contribute to the expanding field of 2D materials by utilizing various MXenes to their full potential and hopes to engineer these materials for improved energy harvesting and as well as EMI shielding capabilities
